Terre d’Hermes is now a cult perfume by a French luxury brand Hermes. It was launched in 2006 and like Dior Homme (2005) in ten years time it managed to rise to the status of modern male classic and show that designer perfumes can offer daring creations and not just niche perfumes. This was a salto mortale of its kind that was so productive that now every self-respectful perfume lower has Terre in his collection.

The inspiration for this perfume Jean Claude Ellena, a famous perfumer and the official nose of Hermes, found in Jean Giono’s novels. Mostly set in aromatic Provance, full of perfume history, Giono’s novels inspired many with their deep and authentic connection to the man and nature that surrounds him. Jean Claude Ellena found them to be the basis for what was later called “earth of Hermes”.

Feeling the earth, lying on the ground, gazing at the sky

Terre d’Hermes is an ode to the grapefruit. Like Guerlain Pamplelune is too but with one difference – Pamplelune is lyrical and Terre’s epic. There is nothing sensual about it, only raw strength set free with every spray of the perfume. It is interesting how one perfume note, in this case, grapefruit, can be so different from perfume to perfume,  depending on the scent composition. While grapefruit in Pamplelune has a juicy, fruity-floral interpretation, in Terre it has strong, earthy character. It is so strong and distinctive that many, when they describe Terre d’Hermes, say it smells dirty, woody, like a moist ground covered with autumn leaves. When you wear this perfume, the effect is similar to Nobile 1942 Rudis or Amouage Interlude – almost terrifying in its strength and force but much more transparent and “purer” than its compatriots. And it bears the mark of its maker. Like most perfumes by Jean Claude Ellena, it has a complicated simplicity. Just a few notes, wood, spices, citrus but measured to perfection. Some perfumers divide their formulas by 100 but Ellena divides them by 1000, his work is so precise and measured. I don’t have to tell you that, all you have to do is smell one of his perfumes. If you’re choosing one for yourself or as a present, Terre d’Hermes is a perfect choice. It is ideal for business meetings and special occasions all year long except in the winter.  No wonder why the roads of every perfume enthusiast lead to “the earth of Hermes.”
