Mandarin (Citrus Reticulate) is a fruit from the citrus family. The mandarin originates from China, where it is considered a symbol of good luck and has a significant, almost sacred role in celebrating the New Year. Its refreshing scent, with hints of fruity sweetness and mild floral intoxication, will make your summer days more optimistic and happier and thus justify its name, domesticated in aromatherapy waters – the scent of children’s joy.
Many homemakers use a mandarin peel to refresh and add a pleasant scent and refreshing feeling to their home. Some ladies put the mandarin peel in their bath to relax as much as possible and permeate each pore with a unique freshness and clean scent, a bit like neroli. Due to its soothing and, at the same time, stimulating aroma, it is often used in aromatherapy.
Due to its medicinal composition, mandarin is used both in medicine, as an alternative approach to treating ailments, and cosmetics. This hesperidic fruit is often used as a top note in perfumes. In most cases, the mandarin essential oil is used, although the synthetic variant is also exciting and attractive in perfumes because it contains a fragrant subtone of orchids and amber. Also, mandarin is unique because it is the only citrus essence with a pronounced floral aspect that harmonizes well with lighter floral notes and the substances obtained from citrus trees’ flowers.
Mandarin essential oil is obtained from the peel of this fruit of heavenly taste. Mandarin peel oil is produced mainly in Italy, Algeria, Spain, and Cyprus, and in slightly smaller quantities in Greece and the Middle East.
To obtain mandarin oil, the peel is squeezed by hand or by machine, the so-called oil expression, which we can simulate ourselves by gently pressing the peel.
The fragrant mandarin oil is really appreciated in perfumes’ production as a great addition to floral notes. Its fantastic, somewhat mystical scent seems relaxing and soothing, and its sensual aspect combines perfectly with other citrus oils. An even better effect and the expressive combination is mandarin oil with nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon.
One of the most popular perfumes with fragrant note of mandarin is Bvlgari Aqua Amara, which brings a unique, dry interpretation of this citrus fruit, just like the scent we get when we leave the mandarin peel on a warm oven. The highly synthetic fragrance will provide fans of this note, which evaporates quickly by nature, with hours of enjoying spring-summer adventures.
An excellent example of perfume with mandarin as the main fragrant note is certainly Prada Infusion Mandarin. Daniela Andrier played perfectly with simplicity in the case of this perfume. The top note is a combination of mandarin leaves’ vitality, mandarin sweetness, and orange blossom warmth, which provides a complete olfactory image of this fruit. The incense and vanilla in the base of this perfume round off the impression, making it more mystical and warmer while prolonging the blend itself’s durability.
The third, certainly no less important example of a great composition of perfume with mandarin, is L’Artisan Parfumeur Mandarina Corsica. Many fans of this perfume say that they adore it because they can feel summer vibes even in the middle of winter. Quentin Bisch’s ability to combine mandarin’s sweetness with immortelle gives it an unusual sweet-salty note that is also reminiscent of bitter liqueurs and maple syrup. This mixture does not hide the floral note of mandarin but only enhances its sweetness.
Also, a great example of the fantastic scent of mandarin is Mandarine Glaciale from Atelier Cologne. This perfect combination of sweet and salty feels best when it dries on your skin in the sun. In this combination, Jasmine perfectly emphasizes mandarin’s floral note, while moss emphasizes the bitterness and freshness of citrus. If you are also a fan of sweet-salty combinations and adore, say, popcorn with caramel, then this perfume will have a stunning effect for you.
And finally, my favorite – Mandarine Basilic from Guerlain, which, at least for me, is the “scent of children’s joy” captured in a beautifully simple bee bottle that characterizes the Aqua Allegoria collection. Whenever I apply it, each of my body cells feels refreshed, playful, and ready for a beautiful and exciting day, no matter how gloomy and gray clouds hover over the city. A simple perfume, but with a potent effect on mood.
