Tom of Finland is a perfume by the eccentric and fantastic niche brand Etat Libre d’Orange, which in addition to high-quality ingredients, crazy names, and imaginative perfume creations has a good, honest, and fair business philosophy where perfumes, despite these qualities that can be envied by the vast majority of brands both niche and designer, have more than a decent price of about 130 euros for a 100 ml bottle. This perfume is inspired by Tom of Finland – an illustrator known for androerotic illustrations that paved the way for the modern aesthetics of masculine appearance, which consists of round, voluminous muscles, inflated to the point of bursting (T-shirt, skin, ego…).

The launch of the perfume was accompanied by one of the most controversial advertising campaigns ever if we ignore the campaign that Tom Ford did for Yves Saint Laurent M7. Pillars, pipes, and other accompanying elements complemented the black-and-white illustrations provided an erotic, 3D effect.

Let’s see what they have to say about Etat Libre d’Orange’s Tom of Finland perfume:

The water flows down him as if sliding down a marble rock, drowning in the folds of his muscles, disappearing into his pores. This is fresh, pure water, with top notes of aldehydes and lemon, water that washes away the sins of last night and leaves the skin glowing. Tom of Finland has a pure aura. It is an ode to the beauty of the male body and the splendor of the natural self.

For this man, clothes become a jewelry box that serves to reveal the true erotic power of the flesh. Tom of Finland is a breath of fresh air, offering unlimited access to the vastness of nature, the depths of the forest, with notes of birch leaf, cypress, galbanum, and pine in the heart of the perfume. Straight, gay… These words are irrelevant here. Tom of Finland is beyond sexuality – it is sex, in all its fullness and greatness, open and upright. His fantasy stands out like his leather jacket, with notes of leather, musk, and ambergris at the base. His belt is fastened in harmony with pepper and spicy fresh saffron, intricate with the sensuality of radiant skin on a vanilla bed of tonka and iris. This is a man who wants play, love, death, and rebirth, over and over again. Tom of Finland is an ode to the glorious possibilities of tomorrow.

If we ignore the deliberate and planned provocative marketing campaign, it is actually one of the best unisex perfumes on the market right now. Some perfumes say “devour me”, a person gets lost in them, reduced to pure and primordial passion, some perfumes remotely make you know that you smell great, but that the person does not need to approach, like Chanel no 19, while some, as is the case with Tom of Finland, they say “taste me”, but not to get lost in tasting, but to enjoy your charm and fantastic scent from a decent but intimate distance.

The perfume composition Tom of Finland is woody aromatic, and the focus is on a special fragrant substance called safraleine. Although it resembles natural saffron, this substance has a far richer, more complex, and interesting scent, which includes notes of tobacco, leather, spices, and a slightly floral scent of the rose ketone. The rich, spicy scent is enriched with an edible sweet tonka, and the safflower leather facet dominates from the very opening of the perfume until the end, when woody notes, milky like sandalwood, are most felt.

There is some discrepancy between the perfume’s name, marketing, and scent, which I don’t typically like, but because the Tom of Finland perfume is so nicely created, we can forgive ELDO. To be honest, I was expecting Tom of Finland to be an animalistic, musky scent like Kouros or dark, spicy vetiver like Encre Noire. Who would have guessed that beneath this name and marketing is one of the loveliest and most wearable leather scents ever, right with Daim Blond by Serge Lutens.  If you’re looking for the perfect perfume for the upcoming fall, whether for yourself or as a present, Tom of Finland will exceed your expectations and awaken your nose and imagination.
