Costarela is a perfume by Spanish niche house Carner Barcelona founded in 2009 by Sara Carner. Perfume creator is Shyamala Maisondieu, a very intelligent, creative, talented lady who, despite her exotic origins, eludes Mediterranean spirit and nature. That is why no one should be surprised she was the creator of many perfumes inspired by nature such as Charogne by Etat Libre d-Orange, a range of L’Occitane perfumes and Tom Ford’s Velvet Orchid. But she surpassed herself with this one because this perfume is not only a representation of an ambient but the perfect essence of sea and sea adventures.

Perfume creators say that Costarela evokes that special feeling of freedom a person can sense only on the open sea and that this is a perfume that captures Meditteranean sea air and the scent of salty wood from the anchored boats. I believe they made a huge mistake. This perfume not only captures those images but, when I smelled it, I was transported into the very distant corners of my memories, when I was a boy, playing in the warm, wet Dalmatian sand drenched with fruity scents and aromatic herbs. The memories of many sea adventures came rushing in, like magic. Costarela reminded me of that mystical and mysterious power of the perfume to bring back memories. The memories of summer vacations I’ve had and dreamt of were like fireworks in a sky of imagination. This perfume has one of the most beautiful bergamot openings I have ever smelled, all creamy and juicy like the lush bergamot jam from Crete you share with your lover over morning tea. My first thought was that this must have been how ancient princesses smelled. Because this kind of craft in haute perfumery is equal to mythology. Top notes of Italian bergamot and saffron give way to sea notes and sand chords. And on this spot, the obsession begins. Those that can’t feel it either can’t smell anything or have never lived. Unusual notes mixed with cedarwood and amber make this Mediterranean heaven where all our memories, desires and emotions felt on this divine triangle of sand, sea and sky are locked.

Costarela is an excellent test that will show if you lived to the fullest while on seaside if you ever fell in love on the seaside. Because, we’re talking about a special kind of free love, a special kind of free life. Try Costarela and if you can’t feel its magic, then you must plan a sea adventure this summer. It is never too late. And when you try Costarela again, you will be swept with emotions and warmed by the golden August sun.
