Imitation Woman is the newest perfume by luxury niche brand Amouage that comes from Oman and is one of the most successful and fastest growing niche brands in the world. For the past 30 years, they have been providing us with interesting olfactive experiences that not only transcend Eastern or Western tastes but combine them into a rich olfactive narrative that tells personal stories, memories, experiences through fragrance notes and chords, proudly cut off from the fickle fashion trends. Those who conquer fear that they’ll never be IN will never be OUT because fashion comes and goes but style lasts forever…
Perfume duo Imitation Woman and Imitation Man were inspired by the childhood of Amouage director Christopher Chong who grew up in a multicultural and multifaceted New York, filled with graphite and neon lights. The moto Life imitates Art introduces us to the concept where artistic expression gives meaning to our memories and hopes, where art defines our past, present, and future.
Imitation Woman is in a way fragrant guide through Studio 54. It opens with the screaming note of blackcurrant like the soprano voice of the disco diva that fills every part of the room. There is nothing else, only high note that seeks undivided attention. It cannot be ignored. Despite the tart and throbbing quality of the note, I have to admit it is one of the most complex and most natural fruit notes I have smelled lately. Versace and Jimmy Choo could learn a thing or two about fruit in perfumes from Imitation Woman. While smelling your hand sprayed with the perfume, you can feel the acid pulp of blackcurrant, its juiciness, the green quality of its leaves and the earthy, patchouli tone of the plant. A wonderful olfactive experience, like Diptyque Philosykos that gives us the same experience but through fig.
Dominant blackcurrant note reminds me of Shock candies that were very popular in my childhood. Not everyone loved them but they were unique. For those brave enough to chew through tartness, the reward followed – the juiciness that tasted better because it wasn’t there from the beginning. The beauty of contrasts. Besides, we get to know the qualities through contrasts in art and in life, just like the slogan says.
The juicy part of Imitation Woman is the mix of licorice, orange flower and rose, sticky, sweet and intimate like the dance in Studio 54. It was a place where everyone wanted to be, intoxicated and ecstatic, dancing the dance that promises eternal youth. My favorite part of this perfume is the hint of sandalwood, and incense in the lower notes. Hedonism mixed with ecstatic emotional and spiritual experiences… perfume resume of Studio 54 cult. Imitation Woman is a perfume that tells a story of unusual place, time and people of an era, the story that happened only once and will never happen again….What more could we wish for?
